CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A controversial coffee shop will soon call Cape Coral its new home. The Seattle-based Baristas Coffee Company is known for serving up more than just a bold cup of Joe.
The Farm Store Express once selling cheap booze and quick bites will be replaced with sexy baristas and fancy drinks. The former on-the-go eatery located at the corner of Cape Coral Pkwy and Palm Beach Blvd in downtown Cape Coral, has been empty for a while.
Locals are excited about Baristas Coffee breathing new life into the rundown building.
"I think it's great, it will bring people. I don't think that they have it in Fort Myers, so it will bring people over the bridge," said Lara Opall, "I don't see a problem with it."
While Baristas Coffee is gaining a reputation of focusing more on who is making the coffee than what's in the cup, the company's CEO says Baristas is looking to compete with staples in the coffee industry.
"Building an international brand that's recognizable that makes you think red, black, and white when you think of coffee instead of that other color," said Barry Henthorn, CEO, Baristas Coffee.
Coffee is big business in the U.S. In 2012, the leading consumer index surveyor Accounting Principals reported the average American spent $1,092 a year on their coffee.
To make the battle over your mug more interesting, the new Baristas in the Cape is located next to 7/11.
Fox 4's Julian Glover showed one regular the Baristas advertisement online.
"Doesn't impress me at all," said Charlie Ewell.
He told Four in Your Corner's Julian Glover the prices are too high and the dress, or lack there of, isn't enough to beat the deals at 7/11.
"I don't think it's too sexy, but that wouldn't have me buy coffee though," said Ewell, "Just because the girls are dressed like that."
Four in Your Corner's Julian Glover showed another woman the video, and she raised other concerns.
"That would make me worry about the sanitation level of the coffee," said Julia Montany.
While locals decided if the Baristas Coffee shop will be a good or bad thing for the Cape, one thing is for sure: If the coffee won't wake you up in the morning, what the servers at Baristas are wearing sure will.
