NAPLES Fla.- A shocking case of animal abuse in Southwest Florida. Neighbors is one Naples neighborhood called police after seeing a man beat eight ducklings with a broom.
One family who didn't want to be identified on camera because they fear for their own safety tell me the ducks roaming around their neighborhood are more like pets, or extended family.
"We love ducks, we love the animals around here it's really beautiful to see all those creatures go around here." One neighbor said.
Neighbors said Monday night they were terrified at what the typically peaceful neighborhood had turned into.
"My mom saw the man grab a broom and swipe them off the floor and they scattered around it was really scary." One neighbor said.
The family said a man who lived in one of the apartments went after a flock of ducklings who had wandered near his unit with a broom.
" My neighbor tried stopping him but it was too late because he already swiped them and killed them." The neighbor said.
Neighbors said they watched the man put eight dead ducklings in a bag and place it next to a dumpster. They say they then Immediately called police.
According to a police statement, an officer went to the alleged suspect's unit, knocked and rang the doorbell several times. No one answered even though it looked like someone was home.
Now, one family is trying to nurse the surviving ducklings back to health while keeping an extra eye out around their neighborhood.
"You don't know what's going on with him you never know if he could come out and do something to the family that called police on him." One neighbor said.
Neighbors said they were also too afraid to give personal information or a sworn statement to officers. So far, no charges have been filed but the Naples Police Department is still investigating.
