NAPLES, Fla.- Several employees who worked at Taste of Chicago on Airport Road in Naples say they have not been paid in months. The restaurant closed about a week ago.
Alyssa Akkoul says she worked there for several months. The last paycheck she received was in March, but she continued to work there until late April despite not getting any additional pay. She now questions whether she will see that money.
"To leave this place is such a heartbreaking moment for me. I wanted to work her. I wanted this place to work so badly," said Akkoul.
She is not alone. Fox spoke with at least 3 employees who say they have not been paid in at least 3 months.
"Did you continue to work there when you weren't getting paid?" asked reporter Julie Salomone.
"Yes. We continued to work because we believed in this restaurant, believed in this owner," said Shawn Black.
Ashlee Bermudez says she realized the owner was struggling when paychecks were replaced by excuses, but she was still surprised to come to work to find the doors locked.
"I showed up to work. All I saw was caution tape and realized the doors were closed," said Bermudez.
Fox took these concerns to the owner. The owner tells Fox over the phone he ran into a financial pinch and was forced to close Taste of Chicago. He is hoping new owners can take over and reopen the place. He assures me employees will be paid in less than 60 days.
Fox will follow up with the employees. So what do you do if you haven't been paid? The Office of the Attorney General suggest contacting your local state attorney's office or the U.S. Department of Labor (Wage and Hour Division).
