I-75 traffic stop leads to marijuana arrests

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Charlotte County deputies arrested two Tampa men after a traffic stop for speeding on I-75 after finding marijuana in their SUV Friday night.
The stop happened on northbound I-75 around 5 p.m. when a Chevy Tahoe was clocked going 78 in a 70 mph zone. When deputies pulled the Tahoe over they immediately recognized the smell of fresh marijuana.
Both the driver, Dequan De Angelo Hinton, 19, and the passenger, Darius Deontre Lopez, 18, were asked to exit the vehicle. When Hinton got out of the truck, deputies saw him drop a small plastic baggie on the ground.
A K9 deputy who arrived to assist walked his dog Kohl around the vehicle. Kohl alerted on the vehicle for the smell of narcotics. When deputies searched the vehicle, they located a gym bag with four vacuum-sealed plastic baggies containing a green leafy substance. The total weight of the four baggies was just under four pounds.
The plastic baggie that was seen to have been dropped by Hinton also contained five grams of a green leafy substance that field tested positive for marijuana.
Both Hinton and Lopez were placed under arrest and searched. Hinton was found to have $1,624 in cash and a package of rolling papers in his possession. Both men were charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. Lopez was also charged with violation of probation.
