PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A local shooting range was filled with pink and ponytails today as parents took their daughters to the shooting range.
The event took place at Point Blank Gun Store and Shooting Range in Port Charlotte as a part of the national "Take Your Daughter to the Shooting Range" event. Point Blank offered free classes to families that came in on Saturday.
"It's a great event to teach kids about the safety of firearms," said Mario Anglero, veteran shooting instructor at the range.
Anglero taught the families a basic safety course on guns and self protection, then they headed into the range.
"I think it's important for younger people to learn safety and how to handle fire arms," said Mike Brenner, who brought his daughter to the range today. "It's just a lot of fun!"
His daughter Megan agrees, "That was my first time I had never done it and it was really fun!"
Karen Hart took her son and daughter to the range today. While the entire family had fun, Hart emphasized that safety and education were the targets.
"We have guns in the house, they're secured., but we want them to handle each gun like they're loaded," said Hart.
This is the second national "Take Your Daughter to the Shooting Range" day with dozens of ranges all across the country hosting the event.
If you missed the opportunity today, you don't have to wait until next year. The owner of the shooting range told Fox 4 he is holding another event welcoming kids to come to the shooting range with their parents' in two weeks.
