CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Lightning was to blame for starting a house fire in Cape Coral early Thursday morning. The family woke up to the smell of smoke. Crews were able to contain the fire in the home's attic.
The fire started around 5:20 am at a home on Sunnybrook Court and El Dorado Parkway East.
"The family woke up to smoke this morning and they could smell it last night when they should have called the fire department," said neighbor Darlene Sherman.
Fire crews had visited the same neighborhood on Wednesday after neighbors saw severe lightning and questioned whether their homes were struck. Neighbors now suspect a lightning strike caused the fire in this home's attic.
"During the storm we had a couple reported lighting strikes in this area," said Battalion Chief Richard Wylie.
Crews tore open a portion of the roof on the home to let the smoke out.
The Red Cross is assisting the family.
