Cape Coral, Fla. - The Cape Coral Elk Lodge is celebrating a birthday, but at the same time recognizing our veterans and active servicemen. Fox 4's Chris Day was there to see the celebration.
"Happy Birthday to you..."
With candles and cake, Cape Coral residents came together to recognize the upcoming flag day, and celebrate those who fought for it. We caught up with a couple of boyscouts helping with the ceremony.
"What it means to me, is I'm proud of my country".
"I think, it makes you sad about the people that are gone"
And with the help of the boyscouts, Elk Lodge number 2596 opened their doors for all Cape Coral residents to join in celebrating the American Flag. One of those in attendance was Cape Coral Mayor, John Sullivan.
"We were elected to represent the people, and of course an election is a situation where if we didnt have freedom we wouldnt have an election. Well without our military, we wouldn't have freedom to have the election. So it means a lot".
Along with the mayor, community leaders from the police, sheriff, fire, and other departments around Lee County came out, to show their support.
"It's the crowning touch to all we do, our constitution, our country, our military. I learned at an early age to love the flag and respect the flag. And I will continue to do so".
And hopefully the next generation will, too.
"It seems like a good hoiday, because its celebrating the flag. I think the flag is very important to our country."
