COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- A root canal or filling can be rough enough, but detectives in Collier County say some people were getting these painful procedures done out of a garage. Detectives said a patient came to them claiming they had paid $400 for a root canal from a so-called dentist operating out of a garage at 4941 Hawthorn Woods Way.
" He was performing x-rays, root canals, cavities, bridges and other dental procedures that he's not licensed to perform." Detective Jose Rosario with the Collier County Sheriff's Office said.
An examining chair, x-ray machines, all things you'd typically see in a doctor's office but were set up in the home's garage. Detectives said Garcia was a pretty smooth operator when dealing with patients.
"You would see a pattern he would go from the address on Hawthorn Woods Way to the Vineyards Publix pick up patients then drive them back to his home." Detective Rosario said.
Austin White has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years and said he never noticed anything out of the ordinary until Tuesday night. He said his quiet neighborhood was turned into a crime scene.
"It is a quiet street not much activity maybe there are a couple cars coming in and out but nothing real exciting. So, it was surprising this was going on so close to home." White said.
Detectives are asking patients and anyone with information about this extremely dangerous operation to come forward.
"It is a serious health hazard to any of the people who went in there and received treatment from him. I would advise them if they have any concerns they probably should contact the Department of Health and Sheriff's office." Detective Rosario said.
Garcia told detectives he practiced dentistry in his native country of Columbia and was working toward getting licensed in Florida. He is facing felony charges and is out on bond.
