PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A Port Charlotte man was taken into custody today on charges he attempted to rob the Dollar General Store located on Kings Highway last Tuesday evening.

Detectives arrested 52-year-old Jeffrey Belcher in Port Charlotte on charges of Robbery with a Weapon Implied and Violation of Probation.

He is currently being held at the Charlotte County Jail on no bond.

On Tuesday May 28, employees at the Dollar General Store reported that a white male wearing a blue T-shirt, khaki cargo shorts, an orange ball cap, sunglasses and flip-flops entered the store with his hand under his shirt.  He approached a clerk and softly told her to open the cash register to give him all the money or he would shoot her.
She was unable to get the cash registered opened and the man left the store.

During the investigation, detectives gathered video surveillance footage from various businesses and received tips that provided Belcher as a potential suspect.

Today detectives who had been watching the area of Belcher’s house saw him driving in the area of Kings Highway and Westchester Blvd. They had learned that Belcher’s driver’s license had been revoked earlier this year.

He was taken into custody on the traffic violation.

While Belcher was being processed, detective obtained a search warrant for his residence, where they located the clothing that the robbery suspect was seen wearing in the surveillance video.
