PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Southwest Florida College in Port Charlotte held their first ever Awards and Pinning Ceremony on June 1, 2013.
This ceremony was held at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County located at 2280 Aaron Street in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Graduates received lapel pins symbolizing their new careers.
This tradition was started in the 1880’s by Florence Nightingale.
She was recognized for her tireless service to the soldiers during the Crimean War with a red cross pin.
These pins now represent the entrance into the professional world from the collegiate arena. Each pin is representative of a specific discipline the college offers.
Guests included several members of the community as well as the graduates and their guests.
More than 130 people were in attendance.
Southwest Florida College Port Charlotte began with just 17 graduates in 2009.
This year 147 people graduated in various Bachelors and Associates Degree fields.
