Lee schools select Graham as next superintendent

FORT MYERS, Fla. - After nearly three hours of contentious discussions, the Lee County School Board selected Naples High School principal Nancy Graham as its new superintendent. Shortly after 1 p.m. the Board broke to send Graham a message to see if she would accept the position.
Graham would replace Joseph Burke who is retiring as superintendent on June 19th.
This morning's meeting pitted two factions against each other over the best approach to take in replacing Burke. Last week the Board had agreed to replace Burke quickly from a short list of candidates that included Graham.
The following day Board member Don Armstrong questioned if the district wouldn't be better served by conducting a national search for a new superintendent. Even today, Armstrong suggested bringing back Burke rather than letting him retire, a proposal quickly shot down by other board members.
