PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - A Port Charlotte man and two inmates at the Charlotte County Jail were charged Friday with a conspiracy to bring drugs into the jail.
Detectives got a tip that Amanda Renee Combs, 22 and Elizabeth Dawn Apple, both inmates at the jail, were planning to have Combs' boyfriend, Howard Edward Ross, help them smuggle drugs into the jail for them.
Detectives learned that the 40-year-old Ross was going to bring four oxydocone pills into the Sheriff's Mid-County office in Port Charlotte on Friday and hide them in the public restroom. That's where Apple, a trustree, would collect the pills while cleaning the restroom.
Ross stopped at the office Friday morning as planned where eventually Ross was stopped and checked for the pills. The search recovered the four pills. The trio were arrested for trying to smuggle the drugs into the jail.
