NAPLES, Fla.- A whale of a tale for a fisherman in Southwest Florida. Some misdirection brought a Naples man face to face with the largest fish species known in existence.
Bill D'Antuono described it as a pretty standard Saturday. Last weekend he hopped on his boat and ventured off Naples City Dock like he had done plenty of times before but said that trip was one he'll never forget.
"It is just kind of surreal I didn't plan on it, you never plan on it." D'Antuono said.
He is no stranger to the gulf waters but Bill D'Antuono said last Saturday a little misdirection-direction led him to one of the world's biggest underwater wonders.
" We actually ended up on the wrong spot and right when we got there I had all my gear ready to go jump in the water and the Whale Shark came up to the boat." D'Antuono said.
Ab extremely unusual sight, the Whale Shark isn't known to frequent our neck of the woods often and is typically found offshore. But at 24 feet long, D'Antuono said the giant fish was hard to miss.
"They're just massive fish, they're so big they have their own colony of fish that swim around them when the fish can range between 50-100 lbs that are swimming around the Whale Shark." D'Antuono said.
He said the species would be even harder to catch.
"When I saw it swimming away is when I jumped in and went after it. They're very elusive and it is very rare to see one and I'm just very lucky I did." D'Antuono said.
Knowing luck might not strike twice, D'Antuono made sure to grab proof of his amazing encounter.
"Immediate reaction was to look at it as long as I could and get as much footage as I could." D'Antuono said.
"It showed interest, it came right up to our boat so it is just one of those things you say "wow" I got lucky hopefully it'll happen again." D'Antuono said.
