PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - A Charlotte County school employee was arrested Tuesday morning for DUI in the parking lot of Baker Center Elementary in Punta Gorda.
57-year-old Noreen Patricia Freeman was arrested for driving under the influence after police received a call about a reckless driver in the area.
The officer arrived at the school and saw Freeman sitting in her car trying to put a sun shade up in her vehicle.
The officer said Freeman, who works as the school nurse, smelled of alcohol and spoke with a thick tongue. She admitted to drinking the night before.
Freeman failed a field sobriety test and later took a breath test for alcohol which showed a blood alcohol level of .275.
Charlotte County Schools says district employees have been arrested for DUI before but this is the first time it's happened on school property and so early in the morning.
"It's disappointing and a concern for the children's that someone would show up in that condition," agreed Michael Riley, the district spokesperson.
Riley says the district will launch its own investigation and Freeman could face anything from a verbal warning to termination.
Freeman bonded out of jail Monday on $750. Riley says she told the principal she won't be returning to work this year. The last day of school is Friday.
