FORT MYERS, Fla. - Local Congressman Calls For Tax Reform in the Wake of National IRS Scandal
Congressman Thomas Rooney from the 17th district of Florida, is calling for tax reform in the wake of the national IRS scandal.
"We've felt like we've had it, there's no confidence left - I've had it personally," Rep. Rooney told Fox 4.
Congressman Rooney views the Internal Revenue Service as corrupt and incompetent. He says that his week's congressional hearing and the excuses the agency offered only made them look worse.
"Somebody's going to have to be held accountable and that might include going to jail," said Rep. Rooney.
The Congressman does not stop there either, Rooney feels now is the time to get rid of the IRS all together.
"We can adapt. We do not have to have the IRS we can do other things."
Congressman Rooney is advocating a massive overhaul which would include either 1) a flat tax, with no deductions or 2) a fair tax, which would replace the income tax with a federal sales tax.
"So if you but a lot of stuff, you're taxed more. If you're frugal, you're not taxed as much," Rep. Rooney said.
Rooney explains that by making on of these changes, this is the only way we are going to restore the public's confidence.
"In the end people know what their taxes are and know that it's fair and they know its uniform and they know that someone else is not getting preferential treatment or targeted because we all know we are paying the same."
These changes would apply not only to individuals, but also corporations.
"GE will finally pay taxes and they will not be able to use lawyers and lobbyists and get around owing what they owe," Rep. Rooney said.
Rooney understands this is a radical notion, but he's ready to fight.
"It will be a momentous task to do what I am trying to do but in this country, nothing is inconceivable."
