Apartment standoff in Fort Myers
FORT MYERS, Fla. - A standoff that began over the noon hour at an apartment complex in Fort Myers at Bernwood Cove Loop and 6 Mile Cypress ended safely. Fort Myers police say it started when a concerned family member went to an apartment to check on the welfare of a female family member.
A man living at the apartment got into a verbal altercation with the concerned family member. The argument grew heated enough that the concerned family member left and called police.
Police arrived and knocked on the door of the apartment and got no answer. A neighbor confirmed hearing the argument. Not knowing whether the man or his female roommate was in the apartment, police decided to treat the incident as a standoff.
As SWAT members got into place, police spotted the man they wanted to talk to and took him into custody.
Police say the man had left the apartment earlier and had returned. It is not known at this time if any charges will be filed. The incident remains under investigation.
