FORT MYERS, Fla. - It's now an empty lot off US 41 in Estero. But in two years, it'll transform into Hertz's worldwide headquarters.
"It means employment for the area," said Andy Powell, the vice president of Wright Construction in Fort Myers. "It means fairly large employment for the construction industry."
We don't know who's building the 300,000 square foot facility, but companies like Wright Construction are lining up.
"We're hoping to of course receive some of the work of the construction of the new facilities," expressed Powell.
Wright Construction hasn't heard from Hertz about the application process.
A spokesperson for Hertz says they won't discuss details of the bidding process. But the company confirms hiring the architectural firm, Gensler, to select a construction company when the time comes.
But a county commissioner says he gets the idea a local company could be tapped.
"I heard they're looking for local companies," said Cecil Pendergrass, who hopes a local business picked. "And I'm sure the local companies will be contacted for the bids for the process for the contracts."
Powell says every part of the building industry could benefit.
"Every facet of building construction would go into the preparation of the bid, or preparation of the pricing to build such facility," explained Powell.
Powell suggests it could create 200 to 300 construction jobs in a year.
As county officials prepare for this economic boost, they are already keeping an eye on the future.
"I'm very excited, happy we're going through the process and I'm looking for the next company," said Pendergrass.
