98-year-old killed in East Naples mobile home fire

By FOX 4 Staff. CREATED May 1, 2013 - UPDATED: May 2, 2013

Naples, Fla. - A mother and daughter are trapped inside a East Naples home on Friday morning after a fire broke out around 5am.

Gina Gasser woke up early Friday morning to firefighters flooding her East Naples neighborhood. Fire crews rushed to a mobile home across the street after flames trapped two women inside.

"When officials broke open and got the garage door up, the smoke just billowed out, big black smoke," said Gasser.

There isn't much damage on the outside of the home on Grosbeak Lane, but the destruction lies inside the home.

"Significant fire inside the mobile home and while battling the fire we searched and found 2 people, successfully rescued one," said Kingman Schuldt, East Naples Fire Chief.

98-year-old Frances Krupa died and her 76-year old daughter Delores Rounds was taken to the hospital.

"It's just devastating, a terrible loss of life. When you live to be 98-years-old and you lose your life in a house fire, it's devastating," said Gasser.

According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office, Rounds activated an emergency button known as "Life Alert" after she smelled smoke and that notified emergency crews.

Eddy Hensley lives next door to the home that caught on fire. He says he woke up to banging on his door from fire officials worried the fire might spread, but crews were able to contain the fire.

"We felt the heat. We saw the ashes coming out from there, smoke and pitch black."

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The state fire marshal is investigating. Neighbors say the family dog was also killed.
