NAPLES, Fla.- How safe is the Naples Pier especially at night? Some city council members are wondering and concerns about drugs, alcohol and other illegal activity have sparked a safety review.
On a soggy Wednesday, the pier is nearly empty except for some dedicated fishermen, but the question one city council member wants answered is what can be done to improve safety at the pier after midnight. went out there on midnight there was underage drinking and shark fishing two violations of city code and state law." 43:20 [Duration:0:04])
"I went out there at midnight, there was underage drinking and shark fishing, two violations of city code and state law," said Sam Saad, city council.
At Wednesday's city council meeting, Police Chief Tom Weschler presented council members with a 6 month review of activity at the Naples Pier after concerns about illegal activity sparked the review.
"A good idea to just go through season to see what happens when we have the most visitors at the pier," Said Police Chief Weschler.
From October 2012 thru March 2013, more than 584,000 visitors stopped by the pier. Police responded to about 350 calls and most incidents happened on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
"Very minor incidents just people showing up with dogs or bringing a glass of wine coming out to the pier no crime of any significance," said chief Weschler.
So what can be done to make sure the Pier remains safe? Lights have been added at the end of the Naples Pier and additional lighting is expected.
"Add low level lights by your feet so you can see if somebody has a tackle box or whatever, just add alittle light and that's coming in the next year."
