CREATED May. 1, 2013

Naples, Fla.  - A successful ending to a state skills competition for some Southwest Florida students turned to tragedy in an instant.

"We had two buses we shared one with Naples schools the other one was full of Charlotte co students the one we shared with Naples was hit head on by a car going in the wrong direction." Charlotte County Schools spokesman Mike Reilly said.

A bus full of students thrown into a frenzy. Charlotte County Schools spokesman Mike Reilly said that's when some unsuspected heroes jumped into action.

"The adult male student who was injured and the teacher on the bus really stepped up made sure the bus was evacuated took over took control of the kids." Reilly said

Every student on the charter bus escaped with just minor injuries. The driver of the other car, a 22 year old teacher from Leon county died in the crash. Even though the outcome ended in tragedy, Reilly said he is grateful it was not worse.

" By them getting the kids off the bus it saved an incident of maybe another car running into the bus or something happening. They got them off the bus off the roadway to safety." Reilly said.

The driver of the bus is recovering from a broken foot. The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol.  A bus carrying students from Collier County arrived back to Lorenzo Walker Technical High School shortly after 9:30 p.m. tonight.
