NAPLES, Fla.- Golden Gate Estates neighbors are alarmed after getting a letter in the mail from a Texas company interested in drilling for oil right in their neighborhood.
Jaime Duran is startled by the letter where a safety technician is asking homeowners for contact information and if they have transportation in case the neighborhood is evacuated.
"They need the name of the main contact of the household, number of people in the household, address and number incase of an emergency."
Duran lives in Golden Gate Estates off of Desoto Blvd. South and 24th Avenue Southeast. Neighbors in the area got the same letter and wondered why their neighborhood would have to be evacuated.
"Very few answers, few answers we can rely on or trust," said Duran.
The letter neighbors received doesn't explain much. Fox 4 got a statement from the Texas based oil and gas company. It explains that Dan A. Hughes Company is interested in drilling for oil in Eastern Collier County. The company intends to get a permit to drill 3 test wells over the next year.
"We are opposed to this, this is a family neighborhood around here, we have children. The last thing we need is an 18 wheeler filled with flammable oil in and out of here," said Orlan McCall, a Golden Gate Estates resident since 2009.
Fox 4 took neighbors concerns to the Texas company. A spokesperson tells Fox they've entered into an agreement with Collier Resources Company to explore for oil in Collier County and they plan to meet with residents to hear their concerns, but tonight neighbors say not in my backyard!
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulates the drilling process. A spokesperson tells Fox 4, the DEP has received a drilling application for a service well at the site, but have not yet received an application in-house for an oil/gas exploratory well drilling permit for the Collier County project.
