FORT MYERS, Fla. - As authorities run around Boston in a hunt for justice, others are running for Boston and the marathon that screeched to a halt this week.
Southwest Florida plans to run for a reason this weekend.
Organizers of a special run say they've had phone calls from people just wanting to do something.
Sunday, a group will head down McGregor Boulevard with the words "Runners united to remember" proudly displayed on their chest.
"Just wish there was something I could do," said Southwest Florida resident Michael Senn.
Fort Myers runners are using their feet to express what's in their heart.
"I see what is going on out there and I feel bad for everyone," Senn said. "Feel bad for the runners and their families."
Senn has been watching the events unfold in the Boston bombings.
"Nonstop," he said.
This weekend Senn will show support the only way he knows how, by running with other Southwest Floridians in honor of the struggling city.
"I think people are at such a loss and feel so empty," said Candace Pemberton of Run Florida on McGregor Boulevard. "How could this happen, and why would this happen?"
She is organizing the 5-mile-run Sunday.
"Maybe it will help people through the process of just being out there and doing something," she said.
There's no cost and no competition for the run.
"It's laid back, just getting together and appreciating what we have and what we didn't have to go through and trying to remember Boston," Pemberton said.
Runs like these are happening across the country this week.
This weekend the tight knit Fort Myers running community will send a message to Boston of support hundreds of miles away.
"I think it's because people feel like they need to do something and that's what they can do best, they can get out there and go run," said Pemberton.
The group will start the run at 7 a.m. at the Publix on First Street and then run down McGregor.
Runners are asked to wear a shirt from a previous race. The run is open to anyone.
