North Port, Fla. - An unpleasant encounter with two by passers over a dog in North Port resulted in a police standoff that lasted several hours but ended peacefully Sunday morning.
North Port police say they received a call to the 2000 block of Sparkle Lane. Two men passing a home encountered a dog running loose along the edge of the road. That led to a verbal fight with the home owner Kevin McDonald.
The two men claimed that McDonald pulled out a handgun, threatened them so they fled and called police at about 9:25 p.m.
When police arrived McDonald went into his home where his wife and two children, ages 11 and 13 live. He refused to leave the house to talk with officers.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office negotiator went to the scene to help get McDonald to surrender. He finally did more than 12 hours later surrendering to police shortly before noon.
