FORT MYERS, Fla. - The American Idol judges weren't impressed Wednesday night but Southwest Florida still has love for Naples native Lazaro Arbos on as he makes his Top 6 debut. Lazaro's family is cheering the loudest.
Four in Your Corner's Kelli Stegeman sat down with Lazaro's cousin Roxanna Perez to find out more about Lazaro and his life growing up in Naples.
"When I see the pictures, it will have all the girls and he's like the last guy left," said Perez of her cousin on American Idol. "That's cool!'
Lazaro is the last man standing in the competition.
"On message boards, all the girls are like oh my God, he's so dreamy," Perez said.
It didn't used to be all positive.
Roxy graduated in the same Gulf Coast High School class as her cousin and on their daily bus rides she saw kids teasing Lazaro because of his stutter.
"Now, is it kind of like, 'ha!" Stegeman asked.
"Yeah," Perez replied. "The first post I made on Facebook was 'Eat your heart out' to all those guys that said all of that negative stuff."
The bus also gave Roxy some of their greatest memories.
"We developed a relationship with the bus driver and so he would put on the radio station and we would sing," she said. "Well, he (Lazaro) would do the singing and there was one time where he looked at me and was like, 'You know, you don't really sing, you talk really loud."
Now, Lazaro is the one getting critiqued. As the American Idol cameras roll viewers see a nice guy. But, Roxy says Lazaro has a sassy side!
She says when Lazaro returns home, he won't be changed by Hollywood. Rather, he will bring some of Tinseltown home to Naples.
"He'll probably have more of a bright wardrobe," she said. "He'll probably go out shopping, but other than that I honestly can't see it being different."
