FGCU headed to Sweet 16, beats SDSU 81 to 71
PHILADELPHIA, Fla. - Cinderella crashed the ball as Florida Gulf Coast University became the first 15 seed to make it to the Sweet 16 beating San Diego State 81 to 71 Sunday night in Philadelphia.
FGCU will face in state rival Florida this Friday on Arlington, Texas.
The Eagles used the same formula that keyed their improbable victory against highly rated Georgetown on Friday.
FGCU trailed by a single point at the half thanks to the steady guard play of Brett Comer and the scoring of tournament hero Sherwood Brown and Bernard Thompson.
With about 14 minutes to go in the game the Eagles started one of their patented runs against the Aztecs. Back to back layups by Thompson keyed a 25 to 6 run by FGCU putting the game out of reach in 10 short minutes.
Thompson led the way in scoring with 23 points. Brown added 17 more and Comer dished out 13 assists to go along with 10 points.
FGCU now stands at 26 and 10 on the year.
