NAPLES, Fla.- Southwest Florida is loving Lazaro, but will the rest of the country vote to keep him on American Idol after he sang Wednesday?
As the Lazaro fan base continues to grow, Idol film crews made a stop in Naples last week to shoot a segment about the Gulf Coast High School graduate.
One phone call triggered a whirlwind of excitement. Jason and Jennifer Gibson manage Rita's Italian Ice in Naples where Lazaro Arbos works and never imagined their sweet shop would turn into a T.V. set.
" We got a call earlier this week and it was from the production company of American Idol. They called the store and said hey we're coming out Thursday afternoon be ready."
Friends, family and fans packed Rita's cheering him on in their Lazaro inspired gear.
" I think it's incredible, you can feel it in the room it's buzzing everyone's excited for him." Lazaro's friend Emily Gipson said.
Wednesday night, the hometown hero hit the national stage performing a "Beatles" number.
The judges didn't give him the best critique but no matter what, family members are behind him and said it is surreal watching him sing in front of millions of Americans.
"He's just so amazing every time I see him on TV. I start crying. I still can't believe he's up there you have no idea." Lazaro's cousin said.
They said they can't wait to see where the future takes him.
"No matter what happens our family is always going to support and be here for you he's always a winner no matter what he was a winner when he auditioned." Lazaro's cousin said.
