CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Cape Coral police released its preliminary findings on a double fatality crash that shutdown Veterans Parkway for hours on Thursday night.
The crash happened just after 5:15 p.m. involving two vehicles, a Hummer H2 driven by 35-year-old Jason Jones of Cape Coral and a Toyota Previa van driven by an unidentified man.
The man and an unidentified woman in the Toyota van both died in the collision. An 8-year-old riding with Jones suffered minor injuries as did Jones.
Investigators say the Hummer was traveling westbound on Veterans Parkway in the outside lane. The Toyota was traveling eastbound in the outside lane of Veterans Parkway.
For unknown reasons the Hummer traveled off the northside shoulder of the roadway into the grass and continued off road for about 500 feet before hitting a row of shrubs with the driver's side of the vehicle.
After hitting the shrubs the Hummer crossed back over the westbound lanes of Veterans before crossing the grassy center median, two lanes of traffic before hitting the drivers side door of the Toyota.
After the initial impact the Hummer spun counterclockwise and came to rest on its roof. The Toyota also flipped over onto its roof.
Both the driver and passenger in the Toyota were dead at the scene. Their identities are still being determined. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash. These are the 9th and 10th traffic fatalities in Cape Coral this year.
