CAPE CORAL, FL. - Is a swingers club operating in a Cape Coral industrial park? City officials are weighing in after FOX 4 viewers turned to us with concerns.
"There is never anything illegal going on." This statement is part of an email sent to FOX 4 reporter Kelli Stegeman from the address belonging to 'The Sorceress' on TheOtherOz.com
The Sorceress saying the location near Pine Island Road and Del Prado Boulevard is part of a club that, according to its website, 'caters to sensually erotic couples and singles in the lifestyle.'
She also says in the email that 'nowhere on the website does it state that the parties are held at that location but that is where you finalize your membership.'
Councilman Marty McClain says if 'finalizing membership' means paying a fee to join the club, it could be as 'illegal as a meth lab.'
"My understanding is they've not been able to operate anything there," Councilman McClain said.
He believes the eviction process has already begun. Meanwhile, city code enforcement is watching it closely.
"You can tell me there is not a license for a sex club to be at that location?" asked Stegeman.
"No!" exclaimed Councilman McClain. "The city, that I'm aware of in all of our license criteria, does not have that, is not part of the list if you will."
Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce President Mike Quaintance said he was surprised to learn of the club's existance. 'The Other Oz' isn't part of the chamber but he says regardless, the chamber doesn't discriminate.
"I think its up to the community to be the moral compass and perhaps not the chamber," Quaintance said.
Stegeman did reach the sorceress by phone on Thursday. She declined to comment on camera but did defend the members of her club in the email.
"The people are usually upstanding citizens in the community who simply enjoy something a little different and always consentual (sic)."
"We want businesses in the city obviously," said McClain. "But this isn't the type of business that we are going to promote, nor will we support in any way."
Councilman McClain says a club like this has been moving from location to location in the city for quite some time. In fact, FOX 4 investigated a home being used for an adult party in 2006 and found those adult parties are legal only if money isn't involved. Again, it's unclear if that's the case here.
