ESTERO, Fla. - "It exploded! Then went onto the lights and fell off"
The Thomas Edison Science and Engineering Fair is in full swing at Alico Arena, where kids of all ages are getting a taste of science, up close.
"We tell kids we're going to blow stuff up, they're like yay, lets get involved in this"
"Its all hands on, theres tons of stuff. We have the zipline where you use legos to build things that run down the zipline"
Alexander Nees spent the day outside building one of those zipline legos
"I called it the friction car because it ran one hundred percent on friction"
But the reason alex came to the science fair today, was inside Alico Arena.
"I won the science fair at my school, and I was going to regionals because I thought regionals would be pretty cool"
Where basketball usually steals the show, students packed the court with research...
"Helping hospitals in third world countries that have minimal to no air conditioning"
"A natural filter that could be utilized to helping increase the water quality".
"A wakeup alarm water shooter, something that squirts water to wake you up"
"A solar cell phone charger"
"A tool that helps people who have arthritis turn the outdoor hose bibs"
Here at the regional competition, its not just ribbons and trophies at stake.
"Anyone can win a four year scholarship to college, and that's exciting to see a 6th grader leave the fair with a four year full academic scholarship"
"The sixth graders really excited about the big trophy, the parents are really excited about that scholarship".
