CHARLOTTE HARBOR, Fla. - Charlotte County detectives report that a woman killed Sunday in a head-on crash was driving a stolen car.
49-year-old Kelly Jean DeRego was killed when she drove her car into the path of another vehicle on Harborview Road at Laverne Street.
Detectives say DeRego had stolen the car and a debit car from a Deep Creek woman earlier in the day.
CCSO received a call Sunday from the owner of a 1999 Honda Accord reporting her car was stolen along with her debit card. The credit card was used at seven different locations at various ATM machines racking up $546.98 in fraudulent transactions.
The 61-year-old woman told detectives that DeRego was her part-time caretaker. DeRego was at her home on Sunday and when the woman took a nap, she awoke she saw her keys were missing to her Honda, along with her debit card.
The driver of the other car survived her injuries.
