NAPLES - Some voters want to know why Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart of District 25 hasn't opened his office to represent them in Collier County.
"Our part of the district is worth that much at least considering what the other part of the district (gets an office)," said Sharon Sappington, a District 25 constituent and decades long member of the Collier Co. community.
The current office located at the Golden Gate Government Center, which was previously occupied by former Congressman David Rivera, is closed. There is a sign on the door that directs constituents to contact the congressman's Miami office.
Fox 4 contacted the Congressman's office to find out if there are plans to open an office for the Collier Co. area.
Congressman Diaz-Balart says his staff is working hard to get the office up and running, but they were unable to spend money or open any office in Collier County until after his swearing-in on January 3rd. Just one day later, Diaz-Balart's office hooked up phone lines and on Jan. 17th the office will be connected to the internet. That's the target date for opening, a fast turnaround says Diaz-Balart.
"During the years when I represented Southwest Florida, I have always han an office in Collier County. Since I was elected to the 25th Congressional district in November, my staff and I have been in the process of setting up the office and finalizing details. We expect for it to be up and running within the next few days. In the mean time, constituents can call (239) 348-1620 for prompt assistance."
The congressman's office also told In Your Corner that it plans to start doing community outreach for members of the Collier Co. area in the weeks to come.
