NAPLES - Besides a few gas convenience stores such as 7-Eleven, not much was open on Christmas Day in Naples, unless you took a trip down Fifth Avenue South.
"Yesterday we had a lot of people coming in thanking us for being open," said Gloria Kovacs, owner of "The Name Game" store along Fifth Ave.
Once the high of opening presents wear off, many families are looking to get out of the house and find something do it and the shops capitalize on that need on Christmas Day, while making money at the same time.
"You just sit at the pool all afternoon I mean it's much more fun to go shopping," said Janet Barnes, who is visiting Naples from Chicago.
A report that tracks spending on popular holiday goods, the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, said Tuesday that sales in the two months before Christmas increased 0.7 percent, compared with last year. Many analysts had expected holiday sales to grow 3 to 4 percent.
Most of the shops long Fifth Avenue South are privately opened on seasonal traffic to provide a boost to their business.
"I did have several sales so it was worth it for me to be open," said Larry Liss of The Blue Muscle. "When we live in a resort area and you have a number of days to be open and to do you your busy every day is important."
