Dan Ashby troubled by new allegations against Tampa VA

FORT MYERS - The step-father of wounded Cape Coral veteran Corey Kent is disturbed by the latest accusations against the James A. Haley Tampa Veterans' Hospital.

Dan Ashby, with the National Coalition for Patriots, has been critical of the Tampa VA since Kent was sent there in 2010 after his legs were blown off in an IED attack in Afghanistan.

On Thursday, Suzanne Wager of Port Charlotte told Fox 4 that her father-in-law was found twice "soaked head to toe" in his own urine and feces and the family was left to clean it up and change the bedding by themselves.

Wager accused the Tampa VA of providing sub-standard care and being under-staffed. It's the same thing the families of three other soldiers have told us over the past several months.

According to Wager, days before her father-in-law was set to be released he complained of pain. She says she had to ask the VA to do an MRI instead of them taking the initiative.

Ashby says he's all too familiar with their concerns.

"We've heard this time and time again with other complaints that we've had," said Ashby. "We had to ask for tests with Corey. We had to have somebody there 24/7 because we were scared to leave him alone."

"That's not the way this is supposed to work," said Ashby.

The U.S. House Veterans Affairs Committee began a Congressional investigation into the Tampa VA. A final report is expected in February.
