LEHIGH ACRES - Jennifer Gonzalez says her 3 year old son Michael could die if she doesn't find a solution to what's become a life threatening problem.
For years, Michael has suffered from a rare blood allergy and can't eat regular foods. He has been surviving on a formula called Neocate - manufactured by a company out of Europe called Nutricia. But Jennifer clailms when Nutricia changed labels last May, they also changed ingredients.
"He starts vomiting, has diarehha, he has back arching pain," said Gonzalez.
So, she's begun a mad scamble to find the old label product online. She goes to Amazon.com and Craigslist and pays hundreds of dollars to feed her son. She also started this website to solicit donations.
And come to find out Jennifer is not alone. This week, I recevied an email from a Maryland woman who is having the same problem. Angela Teague says her 2 and a half yer old daughter is also suffering side effects from the new label Neocate. She suffers from a sugar enzyme deficiency.
"Within one hour we saw redness in the cheeks and skin and it ended up swelling," said Teague.
Both Jennifer and Angela have contacted Nutricia. The company told us last week in a statement they have not changed their product, only the label. We contacted them again about someone else now coming forward having the same problem and tehy emailed us this statement,
"We know it is a challenging and unsettling time for these families. This is why we have engaged independent labs to conduct all proven product and quality tests, including tests for the presence of rice DNA, prebiotic fiber, sugar, and fructose and had consulted with the FDA and leading allergy and immunology experts. Test results confirm that the product remains the same. We are now working to direct the families toward a successful solution in partnership with the right specialists."
