CREATED Nov. 19, 2012 - UPDATED: Nov. 19, 2012

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The murder trial of Robert Dunn took a dramatic turn this morning when he tried to plead guilty.  Dunn is the Coral man is charged with killing wife Christine Dunn at a daycare center in January 2008.

The case came to a halt when Dunn declared that he wanted to testify in his own defense this morning.  Dunn's attorneys are opposed to that.

After a discussion about Dunn's request the judge denied it.  Then Dunn tried to plead guilty.  Now the judge wants Dunn checked for his mental competency.

The jury has been told to return to court next Monday while two experts determine if Dunn is fit to stand trial.l

Dunn faces the death penalty.  His attorney's argue Dunn didn't kill his wife. And that the crime has been misinterpreted.

Last week prosecutors put on a parade of witnesses who say Dunn came into the daycare center and shot and killed his wife.
