PORT CHARLOTTE -- A Charlotte County boy is in critical condition after being struck while running across U.S. 41 in Charlotte County.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Taylor Andrew Welbourne, 12, of Port Charlotte was running across U.S. 41 near Conway Blvd. with another person just after 7 p.m. Saturday when a northbound vehicle hit him.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the Honda Civic driven by Robert Whetsel, 29, of North Port tried to swerve out of the way, and missed one of the pedestrians but could not avoid hitting Welbourne.

Welbourne went airborne and landed on the hood of the vehicle.  He was rushed to Lee Memorial Hospital, then airlifted to All Children's Hospital in Tampa.

The Highway Patrol says charges are pending in the case.
