FORT MYERS, Fla. - Drivers heading eastbound on Daniel Pkwy underneath the interstate 75 overpass face traffic delays and detours as work continues on a damaged overpass.
"It was surprising because it did take us longer to get here. And if we hadn't left with plenty of early time kind of knowing the detours were here, we probably won't have made it here on time," said David Turner, a Siesta Key resident.
Turner and his wife were heading east on Daniels Parkway to drop off a friend at Southwest Florida International airport, but on Monday afternoon the eastbound lanes were closed to traffic.
"We were coming down Daniels Highway from Sanibel and they made us get off," said Kathleen Turner.
"It was horrible... And then people like switching around trying to get some place and get (the lane) before you," said David Turner.
Turner was forced to get onto I75 southbound to Alico Rd, and then took Treeline Ave S. to get into the airport.
Construction crews are making periodic lane closures repair parts of the overpass that were damaged when a tractor trailer slammed into it on Nov. 6th.
Work on the overpass is estimated to cost roughly $750,000 when completed.
Late in the evening, workers opened one lane on eastbound Daniels Parkway to traffic, which was moving along smoothly as of 8pm Monday night.
Work on the overpass could take several more weeks and could impact traffic to the airport as we head into one of the busiest travel holidays, Thanksgiving Day.
