Now under city control, what's next for the CRA?

CREATED Nov. 5, 2012
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A battle over jobs and growth in Cape Coral. It's all over the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). Now that city council has voted take the reins of the agency.

With Cape Coral's Community Redevelopment Agency now controlled by the city come suggestions from the very people who rely on it.

“Come up with a plan to direct staff on moving forward and working with the downtown development.” Elmer Tabor says.

“It'd be a real shame not to have staff that would help us bring more business to the city.” Carlos Acosta says.

A plan is essential to these downtown business owners because council's first meeting as the new CRA is Wednesday.

Officials say this absorption of the agency will save upwards of $300,000 a year. But there are jobs at stake.

“Do we know yet about the three staff employees from the CRA. What's going to happen to their jobs?  Fox 4 asked.

“That is something the city council sitting as the CRA board is going to discuss. We'll see.” Rana Erbrick said.  “Some may be spared, all may be spared.”

Some CRA supporters are just hoping this transition goes smoothly.

“Now we have to learn how to play together and that's more important than anything else.” Bertolini said.

We should know more about what the city plans to do with the CRA at their 5 o'clock meeting on Wednesday.
