CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Imagine walking your dog in the morning and finding dead animals along the sidewalk and near a canal. Well, it's happening to some residents, who are ready for Halloween to end even before it begins.
"It's the smell of death, for sure," said Michael Mitchell, of Cape Coral.
Hanging from a tree by a Cape Coral canal sits just that.
"The chickens smell, the hogs smell and we see chickens hanging from the trees in bags," described Michael, who lives a street away from the scene.
Michelle and Michael Mitchell say they've been complaining to the county about animal carcasses cropping up on nearby Birkdale Avenue for weeks. Like a dead chicken they found with rope tied around its foot.
"I thought it was horrible," said Michele. "It was disturbing."
"I saw the vultures hanging around," added Michael.
That's when they made a startling discovery, as shown in video shared exclusively with Fox 4. Three weeks ago, the Mitchells' came across what appeared to be hog remains.
"I saw the bleach, brown profile of a rib cage and a spinal cord, a spinal column and a lot of bones scattered on the ground," explained Michael. "And what'd you think when you saw it?," asked Fox 4 reporter Gabrielle Sarann. "I thought, 'Gee it could be a crime scene',"he replied.
Neighbors say the problem is escalating. That almost every other day they're noticing these eyesores.
"I'm concerned for my animals, I'm concerned for my neighbors animals, only because i don't know what we're dealing with," said Michele.
The Lee County Sheriff's office says it's filed three reports about this. Though, there's no active criminal investigation unless someone were caught illegally dumping the animals.
"I think they need to send somebody out to investigate the situation and give us some answers," added Michele.
To a menacing situation leaving residents spooked.
"To me, all they're doing is turning a peaceful stretch of roadway into a child's nightmare," concluded Michael, who would also like to see authorities investigate this further.
