FORT MYERS BEACH - Despite challenges that threatened to cancel the 7 year annual tradition, Pirate Fest revelers flooded Ft. Myers Beach on Saturday.
“Lots of people out here enjoying themselves (and) having a good time with all the pirates,” said Greg Engle, a pirate performer.
The three days extravaganza, which culminates on Columbus Day, features music, performances, food and no shortage of people dressed in their best pirate costumes.
But the event was in jeopardy of not happening because the original promoters apparently dropped the ball on necessary preparations by failing to obtain permits for alcohol and live music in time.
“All of the residents in this area have to be notified two weeks in advance before there is live music,” said Bonnie Roberts, vendor coordinator.
Since Pirate Fest brings tourists to Fort Myers Beach that will spend money, several businesses owner jumped in to save the celebration, which they did.
Despite that fact that no alcohol was served or the lack of live music, organizers say the event was a success.
