CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A scam popping up in Cape Coral that tries to scare you into thinking you have to pay thousands of dollars in assessments or risk losing your land.
Empty lots should fetch a big price. But instead landowners are getting lowballed.
The owner of one plot of land was surprised when he was only offered $500 dollars when he was asking for $19,000.
Cape Coral says a new scam is targeting vacant property owners using the city's utilities expansion project as a ploy. Residents are receiving notices like this saying they'll have to pay $20,000 in sewer assesments or lose their land in four months.
“Not one word of this is true.” Councilman Kevin McGrail says this is ridiculous. Landowners should be cautious if they get this in the mail.
“I don't know what city they live in but in the city of Cape Coral, we have made none of these decisions.” McGrail says.
Some of the LLCs behind this calling themselves M-T Lotz, Ima Landbank and Robb-Morr Real Estate.
“That is not even funny, it's very unfortunate.” McGrail says.
The irony of the con is sewer hookup in the north Cape won't even begin until at least 2015.
“For them to make a statement the sewers are coming, that's incorrect.” McGrail says.
A little advice from someone who almost fell prey, but knew better.
“It would be a good idea, if you get a notice like that, don't just fall for it, do a little homework.” McGrail says.
There is no sewer expansion project happening anytime soon in north Cape Coral. So please, if you get the notice, don't be alarmed. Toss it.
