FORT MYERS - Dan Ashby, the step-father of wounded Cape Coral soldier Pfc. Corey Kent, says he will run for Cape Coral mayor.
"We need to get somebody in that's going to work well with the new city manager," said Ashby.
For the past two years, Ashby fought to change conditions at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa after describing "deplorable conditions.
His step-son, Kent, briefly stayed at the TAmpa VA after he was injured in an IED attack in Afghanistan.
Ashby founded the National Coalition for Patriots, a local group which provides supports to military veterans. He says he wants to help oversee the new Cape Coral VA and straighten out the city's finances.
"Make a city budget that's going to last," said Ashby. "It's not going to be a yearly vote...we can get a three to five year budget in place."
Ashby will try to unseat incumbent Mayor John Sullivan.
