Bank customer who "owed" $888K gets apology

CREATED Sep. 13, 2012 - UPDATED: Sep. 13, 2012

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A Cape Coral father of four is getting his money back after Fox 4 stepped in.

"I feel so happy," said Phil Desir. "And I will say thank you to Fox 4."

The day after Desir opened a Bank of America checking account, the bank said he owed $888,888.88 - which Desir knew was a mistake.

The bank, however, deducted a paycheck to pay down the staggering debt which he didn't owe.

On top of that, bank records show they charged him a $40 "research" fee to look into the matter. After two weeks of getting nowhere Desir called Fox 4.

The day after his story aired, Bank of America called him to apologize and admitted they made a mistake, according to Desir.

He says he was refunded around $350 - the amount of his paycheck they seized and the $40 research fee.

Desir says he already spent the money on an electric bill which was due and medicine he needed

"I got my money back," said Desir smiling. "And I bought medicine with it because I needed it so bad."

"So a happy ending?," asked Fox 4 reporter Matt Grant.

"I'm so happy," said Desir. "Thank you, thank you, thank you so much."
