CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - A prank led to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office launching its helicopter early Monday morning to search for two missing men in the Gulf of Mexico.
A boating trip that started from Port Charlotte Sunday morning took a twist sometime after dark.
A group of two men and four women were partying on the boat. According to the Florida Wildlife Commission the two men jumped off the boat to relieve themselves in the Gulf. The women decided to scare the men and drove off in the boat.
When they returned to the area to retrieve the men near Turtle Bay and then were unable to find them. After 30 to 40 minutes of trying to locate them, they contacted emergency services.
Beside the Sheriff's Office helicopter several other agencies participated in the search for the two men. The search ended when the CCSO helicopter using its FLIR heat seeking equipment located the two men in waist deep water, frantically waving. They were found about 1½ miles north of Cape Haze Point, and about a quarter mile off shore.
The FWC is still investigating the incident.
