LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Lee County Emergency Medical Services temporarily suspended its MEDSTAR flight operations today.
The helicopter service flies critically injured or ill patients to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment and sometimes ferry's patients for treatment in Tampa.
Despite the suspension Lee County Public Safety Director John Wilson said, "We will rely on mutual aid support to assist us during this reconfiguration period. Safe operations are our No. 1 priority."
Wilson says that mutual aid will mean helicopter service will be available to Lee County, presumably from Collier County's MedFlight, from a service in LaBelle or from Tampa.
The suspension will last for six to nine months will staff works to insure that MEDSTAR meets established national safety standards.
