Lee County deputy injured in stolen car pursuit
GATEWAY, Fla. - A wild chase that stretched from Treeline Avenue and Daniels Parkway east to Gateway ended with a Lee County Sheriff's deputy injured and a suspected car thief in custody.
The deputy ran a tag check on a vehicle he was following on Treeline. Once he realized it was reported stolen out of Fort Myers he attempted a traffic stop. The suspect took off in the stolen car fleeing eastbound on Daniels Parkway. At one point during the chase the suspect tried to ram the deputy's marked patrol car.
Two deputies attempted a PIT maneuver to stop the fleeing car and the vehicle spun out of control and stopped. Two deputies got out of their cars to take the driver into custody but he hit the gas attempting to run over the one of the deputies. One deputy drew his weapon and fired to stop the fleeing suspect who continued to travel east on Daniels Parkway toward Gateway.
More deputies deployed stop sticks near Gateway boulevard to stop the fleeing suspect. Two citizens inadvertently struck the stop sticks bring their cars to a stop.
The suspect vehicle made a u-turn and sped off toward I-75 but lost control of his vehicle at Westlinks Drive. A pursing deputy sideswiped two civilian vehicles as he attempted to stop the fleeing driver.
Deputies at this point managed to arrest the suspect. The deputy who sideswiped the two vehicles received minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. There were no other injuries sustained during this incident.
