COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - It's a heated issue in Miami right now and voters could decide this Tuesday to end a ban on pit-bulls. A Collier County group of volunteers are just getting back from a huge rally in Miami Sunday to end dog discrimination.
Only Four In Your Corner's Colleen Hogan has the story, of why the volunteers want to end the breed-specific legislation.
Pit bulls have been banned in Miami for more than 20 years. The Pit Bull Crew, a group of volunteers within Collier County's Domestic Animal Services, wants to make sure we don't see any county-wide breed-specific legislation in Southwest Florida anytime soon.
"We had a great day," Jeanette Jolly, with The Pit Bull Crew, said. "Lots and lots of people, great rescue representation."
Jolly says 10 volunteers traveled across the state to be part of the 'Miami 500,' a huge rally of animal advocates to encourage Miami voters to end the ban on pit bulls.
"We attended because while currently, there's no breed specific legislation in Lee or Collier Counties, we feel the need to represent," Jolly said. "Because any day, it could be in your own neighborhood."
Jolly says some dog discrimination already exists with so-called bully breeds in some apartments, rentals, home-owner's associations and insurance companies.
"We do have dog discrimination here already in a sense," she said.
The Miami 500 was held at the Hialeah Racetrack and featured Tia Torres, star of the TV show 'Pit Bulls and Parolees.' There were other celebrities and guest speakers there as well, all trying to change the negative public perception.
"They are a terrific family dog," Jolly said, of the breed. "Pit bull terriers were actually noted throughout history as being the nanny dog. They were brought up to guard and take care of children."
The Pit Bull Crew is headed back to Miami this Tuesday to represent at the polls. We'll keep you updated on how residents vote.
If you're interested in adopting a pit bull, head to Collier County Domestic Animal Services.
