New healthcare benefits for women

CREATED Aug. 1, 2012

WFTX - Say good-bye to paying a co-pay for the pill.

As of today, 47 million American women will have access to free contraceptives -- as part of the Affordable Care Act.

It's just one of eight well-woman health benefits that insurance companies are now required to provide for free.

Not all insured women will have access to the new services.

Certain insurance plans that existed before the passage of health care reform may have "grandfathered" status and may be exempt from offering the benefits.

Women can call their employers to ask whether they are in "grandfathered" health insurance plans.

Congress passed the law, also known as Obamacare, more than two years ago, but it is being implemented in phases.

Republicans still say they want to repeal it.
