Lee County school bookkeeper accused of theft

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - A bookkeeper is accused of stealing almost $8,000 from a Lehigh Acres middle school.

Yidenia Alonso, 32, of the 1500 block of Gretchen Avenue, was arrested by Lee deputies and is facing charges of grand theft and scheme to defraud.

Alonso was a bookkeeper at Varsity Lakes Middle School, where investigators say she took $7,879.36 that was intended to benefit the students.  An internal audit showed that money Alonso collected from students, parents, and teachers was unaccounted for.

Between February 2009 and March 2010, she was given cash and checks by parents for their children to attend a morning program.  She also collected funds from concession stands and ticket sales at school events.

Investigators say Alonso was careful to deposit the checks she was given, but would pocket most of the cash.
