FORT MYERS, Fla. - More violence in Fort Myers. A bullet-riddled Toyota Camry being towed out of Gulf Stream Isles Apartments.
Resident Joanna Ray heard gunshots just before 4 am Tuesday.
"Did it sound like a handgun or more a machine gun? A machine gun, definitely a machine gun" Joanna said.
When police arrived, they found 2 people shot to death inside a car.
23 year old Jarrett Byrd and his girlfriend 16 year-old Chariah Owens were up front. They had multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
In the back seat, was Owens' 3 year-old cousin, Alicia Owens, who miraculously escaped injury. The girl was asleep when police found her. She is Owens' cousin.
"There was a child. The child was taken out of the car, taken to a local hospital, was checked out and was just fine." Sgt. Sean Hoover said.
According to neighbors, Owens was four months pregnant.
"She was pregnant from what I understand. she was going to find out a due date, but didn't make it." Joanna Ray said.
Police say the couple was visiting a friend when the shooting took place, but residents say Byrd and Owens had been living here.
"I would see him when I go to my mailbox, when I go to my trash can. He always spoke to me. Very friendly and quiet."
Police are looking for suspects, but say they a have very few leads. “Unfortunately, the time it happened, everyone was asleep, so we knocked on doors. We've been talking to people, and no one has really seen anything."
Byrd was arrested twice in 2011 for carrying a concealed weapon.
We asked police if this double homicide is related to last Friday's murder on Colonial Boulevard.
"It's too early to say anything right now." Fort Myers Police representative Shelly Flynn said.
